OCR Scanner: Make Searchable PDFs on iPhone

OCR, optical character recognition, is what turns a photo of text into text you can actually use: searchable, selectable, copyable. It is the difference between a pile of images and a document library. Here is how it works on iPhone, entirely on-device.

What OCR actually gives you

• Search inside documents: type a word or phrase and instantly surface the contract, receipt or note that contains it, down to the specific page, with matches highlighted.
• Searchable PDF export (Pro): an invisible text layer is embedded under the page image, so the PDF behaves like a born-digital file in Preview, Adobe Reader, or any viewer: searchable, selectable, quotable.

On-device OCR vs cloud OCR

Most scanner apps run OCR in the cloud: your pages are uploaded, read on a server, and the text is sent back. That is a business decision, not a technical necessity, because cloud OCR lets those apps run on cheap clients while collecting valuable data.

Think about what that means in practice. The documents you most need OCR for, contracts, statements, medical results, IDs, are exactly the ones you least want on someone else's server. Cloud OCR means your most sensitive text becomes readable to the operator by design.

DocScanner uses Apple's on-device recognition engine instead. OCR runs on your iPhone's neural hardware: it is fast, free, works in airplane mode, and your pages never leave the device. Languages and mixed pages

Recognition covers dozens of languages, including English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and Russian, and handles mixed-language pages, a contract with English legal terms and Korean names, gracefully. The text is indexed automatically as you scan, so there is no “process” button and no waiting: search is simply always ready.

Finding a needle in a hundred scans

The real payoff of OCR arrives a month later, when you need one line from one page and cannot remember which document it lives in. Search in DocScanner matches document titles, tags and the full text of every page simultaneously. Results show a snippet with your search terms in context, so you can pick the right document at a glance.

Open a result and Find in Document takes over: it lists every page where the words appear, shows the surrounding text, and jumps you straight to the match. What used to be ten minutes of squinting at thumbnails is now four seconds of typing.

Searchable PDFs that survive sharing

Search inside the app is free. When you need the PDF itself to be searchable, at work, in court, in an archive, Pro embeds the OCR text as an invisible layer during export. The file looks identical, but text can be found and selected in any PDF viewer on any platform. Selection highlights line up with the printed words, because the layer is positioned to match the page geometry, not just dumped in a corner.
