How to Sign a PDF on iPhone (Free, No Printer)

The print-sign-scan-email ritual is dead, and nobody misses it. Whether the document arrived as a PDF attachment or on actual paper, you can sign it on your iPhone and send it back within a minute, looking exactly as if it crossed a desk.

Sign a document in 4 steps

1. Get the document into DocScanner. Scan the paper with the camera, or, for a PDF someone emailed you, open the attachment, tap Share and choose DocScanner. The PDF is imported as a document, page by page.
2. Tap Sign. A signature canvas opens. Draw your signature with your finger, slow, deliberate strokes come out surprisingly natural. Not happy with the first take? Clear and redraw until it looks like you.
3. Place and resize. Drag the signature onto the signature line, pinch to size it, nudge it into place. It sits on the page like ink.

Tips for a signature that looks right

• Draw large, then shrink. Signatures scale down beautifully but scale up poorly. Use the whole canvas.
• Use landscape if your signature is wide, you get more room to draw naturally.
• Slow down. Finger-drawn signatures at natural speed look shaky; at half speed they look like pen on paper.
• Match the ink. A slightly imperfect drawn signature reads as more authentic than a perfect font ever could.

Is a drawn signature legally valid?

For most everyday documents, yes. Under e-signature frameworks such as ESIGN and UETA in the United States and eIDAS in the European Union, a simple electronic signature, including a drawn image placed with intent to sign, can be legally effective for ordinary agreements. Millions of leases, invoices, permission slips and freelance contracts are signed exactly this way every day.

For high-stakes documents, notarized deeds, some court filings, transactions where the counterparty specifies a qualified e-signature process, follow whatever process is required. For everything else, a signed PDF is standard business practice, and the person on the other end almost certainly signs their own documents the same way.
